Job Description and Requirements
Qualifications and Skills:
- Hold a degree in Early Childhood Studies, Elementary Education, or Classroom Teacher
- Have a minimum of three years of relevant experience in teaching this age level.
- Have excellent communication skills
- Have excellent time management & organizational skills
- Have very good ICT skills
- Is a team player with excellent interpersonal skills
- Preferably bilingual (English & Arabic)
The purpose of the KG programme is to lay the foundation of academic and social development and ensure that students are prepared for the transition to the Junior School. The KG teacher is the critical agent in this development and is therefore expected and required to maintain the highest possible standards in all areas of his/her work.
This involves:
- providing a warm and effective learning environment for students;
- undertaking of pastoral, supervisory and extracurricular responsibilities;
- contributing to the academic, pastoral and general development of the students as individuals and of the school as a whole.
Specific responsibilities of the KG teacher include:
- ensuring that he/she is familiar with the School’s policies guiding statements, practices, expectations and curriculum;
- teaching such classes as per the timetable set by the Head of KG;
- preparing the work for these classes in accordance with the agreed KG curriculum;
- effectively implementing the KG academic and social curriculum through the work undertaken in and out of class to best meet the needs of the individual learners;
- regularly monitoring each student’s performance and progress against the criteria set in the KG curriculum documents;
- keeping appropriate records of each student’s attendance, performance and progress;
- alerting the Head of KG when a student’s attendance, performance or progress does not meet the expectations of the school;
- setting clear and high expectations for students;
- ensuring that his/her classroom is a warm and inviting learning centre;
- bringing any safety or maintenance issue to the attention of the Head of KG, so they can be taken care of;
- undertaking such supervisory duties as may be assigned by the Head of KG;
- communicating to parents on the performance and progress of their child(ren) in accordance with the format approved by the Head of KG;
- participating actively in the preparation of materials and displays to support implementation of the KG programme;
- contributing actively to the pastoral care and welfare of KG students;
- attending meetings and professional development sessions as may be called by the Head of KG and/or the leadership team;
- continuously undertaking personal professional development through reading and attendance at workshops and courses;
- participating actively in all agreed extra-curricular activities, programmes and projects which support the KG programme and the development of the students;
- assisting the Head of KG in the interviewing and assessment of applicants for places in the KG;
- complying with the School’s Conditions of Service;
- Undertaking additional responsibilities as may reasonably be required by the Head of KG within the Conditions of Service.
Additional Duties
A KG teacher’s first and foremost duty is to ensure the complete safety of his/her students. Students Should Not Be Allowed To Touch Electrical Wires, Plugs Or Sockets Under Any Circumstance.
A KG teacher is also responsible for:
- preparing the classroom for the beginning of the year during the Orientation Week;
- participating in morning line-up and escorting the class into the classroom;
- taking the morning register;
- calling parents if a student has been absent for two consecutive days;
- writing the names of absent students on all circulars issued to the class and pin them on the class bulletin board to be given to the student upon his/her return;
- preparing packets of work for students who must travel for an extended period of time during the school year;
- making sure that the classroom is kept tidy and provides a stimulating environment for the students;
- Maintaining shelves by arranging their contents tidily and attractively. Teachers should not leave unsightly cardboard boxes or scraps of card/paper on shelves or tables at the end of the school day;
- attending weekly and unit planning sessions;
- ensuring that the unit planners, activity description sheets and lesson plan book are kept up-to-date;
- arranging, well in advance, any piece of equipment, resources, etc. they may wish to use during a lesson;
- supervising the students on the playground and escorting them to and from the classroom as specified on the duty roster;
- writing unit newsletters and circulars to parents;
- preparing for and presenting the open house presentations for parents;
- preparing the students for the annual class performances;
- preparing notes for the Parent/Teacher Conferences held in November and April of each academic year;
- writing the Class Teacher’s comments on the School reports at the end of each semester, as well as checking that the reports are filled in by other staff;
- preparing bulletin board displays;
- labeling the display area according to its content;
- removing all children’s work from boards once they are out-of-date;
- maintaining the displays so that they are eye-catching and attractive;
- Making every effort to use any available space around the facility to display students’ work.
Reporting Relationship
A teacher reports directly to the Head of School for carrying out their duties and responsibilities.
